THE HIVES Continue Bid For World Domination
May 10, 2002Sweden's latest rock sensation THE HIVES continue their bid for world domination and have set an impressive record on the way. The recent issue of Kerrang!, sporting THE HIVES on the cover and a CD with music selected by the band, became the biggest-selling issue ever of the legendary magazine, with sales exceeding 120,000 copies. Expect THE HIVES to be a staple cover act in Kerrang! in the future.
Contrary to reports, THE HIVES have NOT signed to the Warner record label in the States. THE HIVES' sophomore album, Veni Vidi Vicious, was released by Epitaph in the US two years ago via a licensing deal with the Swedish label Burning Heart. As of April 2002, Epitaph has in turn licensed the disc to Sire/Warner. However, THE HIVES remain directly signed to Burning Heart.
Since being reissued by Sire/Warner, Veni Vidi Vicious has continued to pick up steam. Last week it entered the Billboard 200 album chart at #193, with Soundscan sales of 6,002, and this week it climbs to no. 138, with sales of 8,008. To date, the record has sold 39,336 copies, according to Soundscan numbers provided by Burning Heart.
A compilation album released only in the UK, entitled Your New Favourite Band (compiling songs from the band's two full-length albums, Barely Legal and Veni Vidi Vicious) has sold 240,000 copies in the UK since its release six months ago. Still sitting firmly in the Top 40, the disc is expected to be certified platinum (sales of 300,000) this summer, aided in no small part by the recent release of the group's new single, "Main Offender", and upcoming appearances on the hugely-popular TV shows Top Of The Pops and Later With Jools Holland.
In related news, THE HIVES have announced what is certain to be the most unusual performance of their career. On July 21, the fivesome will perform in the middle of a lake outside their hometown of Fagersta in Sweden. The audience will reportedly be standing on the beach while THE HIVES rock out in the lake during the Swedish national waterskiing championships! If THE HIVES don't get electrocuted and survive this concert, they hope to commence work on a new album towards the end of 2002.
